What Is ‘Scrying Art’?
Scrying Art (coined by Elina Auriel to define her artistic practice) is a contemplative form of layered abstract painting designed to invite meditative observation, symbolic perception and personal interpretation. Rather than depicting a fixed narrative, ‘Scrying Art’ reveals different forms, emotions and meanings depending on the viewer, the light and the moment of observation.
Like traditional forms of scrying (looking into water, smoke, mirrors or crystals), Scrying Art paintings are designed to become a reflective surface for the psyche.
Each work unfolds differently depending on the viewer, the surrounding light, the distance from which it is observed and even one’s emotional state. Shapes emerge and dissolve. Botanical forms may become faces, landscapes may become memories, and what is hidden one day may become obvious the next.
There is no incorrect interpretation.
The artwork does not tell you what to see, it simply invites you to look within.
A Word From Elina:
”When I was a small child, I would see abstract images with unique colors and shades in my mind’s eye.
I asked my parents to take me to painting classes but when I saw that the kids at those classes were being forced to color inside the lines of printed out pages of cartoon characters I screamed and ran out in bewilderment.
In Kindergarten I knew I wanted to paint mermaids as a concept so I created an abstract landscape with oceanic waves, foam and sprinkles only to have my art destroyed by the teacher (and the kids around motivated by said teacher) because ”that’s not what we are doing”. I proceeded to sketch a generic mermaid-looking person like everyone else but still they were not happy with me because ”why is her skin blue-green”… As a small kid already then I was genuinely shocked that people lacked even the basic ability to imagine that the skin of a mermaid would reflect the depths of the underwater world she came from – let alone details like the rays of the sun around her as they penetrate through the surface of the waters…
Ultimately, I stole my older sister’s painting supplies at home and emptied a whole deep green on a piece of A4 paper, adding stickers and creating an abstract map. I was met with anger and my art was destroyed and thrown in the garbage. I remember sobbing over the garbage bin feeling like I was going to die to see my art torn to pieces.
I ventured into music after that…
In 2022 I grabbed a brush for the first time as an adult, with the intention to heal that last traumatic memory as it offered itself for processing during a Shadow Work integration exercise. My partner cheered me on all the way from the painting supplies shop to when I finally showed him in tears my first abstract piece (I used in purpose that same deep green shade…).
From that moment on, something healed in me. And at the same time something couldn’t stay quiet in me and wanted to be expressed! And that is how I started creating my Scrying Art paintings, mixing acrylic and other natural materials such as ashes, resins, incense.
I create when I am moved to. And so I hope you enjoy my Soul Essence transmissions and they heal a little something for you…”
